STUDY:
University College London

THE ACTING SELF: THE EFFECTS OF THEATRE TRAINING ON SOCIAL COGNITION.

This study is looking to invite people aged 18-40 who live/work in London and can travel to UCL to take part in this enrolment survey. Please do not take part in this enrolment survey if you are not able to travel to central London (near Russell Square Station) between Monday 3rd February - Tuesday 11th March 2025 for our brain imaging study.

This study is designed and carried out by researchers working with Professor Antonia Hamilton, Principal Investigator of the Social Neuroscience Group, and Dr Anna Ciaunica, Principal Investigator at the Instituto Superior Tecnico, University of Lisbon. Their funding comes from the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and The University of Lisbon. INTERSELF is generously funded by a Fundaçao para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) grant under the reference PTDC/FER-FIL/4802/2020, awarded to Dr Anna Ciaunica (PI) and Prof. Antonia Hamilton (co-PI).

The purpose of this research is to investigate brain activity when you complete a task alone or with another person. This is an enrolment survey to assess whether you are eligible for the follow up brain imaging study.

The purpose of the online survey is to check whether you are eligible to participate in their in-person brain imaging study. This survey takes 8 minutes to complete. You will be asked to complete questions on your demographic background, experiences of the world and eligibility for brain imaging research. If you are eligible, they will then invite you to take part in a brain imaging study to measure how your brain responds when performing tasks with other people or alone.

The brain imaging study will take place in central London (near Russell Square Station) between Monday 3rd February - Tuesday 11th March 2025 – if you choose to take part, you can select an exact date and time to suit you.

You will be invited to their lab to complete some simple computer tasks while wearing a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) cap. This is a brain sensor which uses light to measure brain activity. The visit to the lab will take up to 2 hours and you will be paid for your time
