Eklavya’s Story: Supporting Those Experiencing DPDR

Imagine being swept away by a powerful ocean wave. The world around you blurs, sounds become muffled, and you feel detached from your body, like you're just an observer watching from afar. It is an intense metaphor to relate to the experience of DPDR.

As a carer for someone with DPDR... I know how overwhelming and isolating this condition can be. But please know...you are not alone. This post aims to shed light on the process of supporting loved ones with their experiences, as you play a vital role in their journey towards recovery.

Here are some key points to remember:

  • Patience: DPDR recovery can be a long process especially when it is chronic. Be patient and understanding with your loved one as they may not feel emotions to such an extent but that does not mean they don’t value you; they may not be able to express themselves well, but they do value you.

  • Observe and Support: Pay attention to what triggers their DPDR episodes and what can be the coping mechanism for them and offer support during those times.

  • Focus on Communication: Open and honest communication is essential. Let your loved one know you're there for them and listen without judgment.

  • Take Care of Yourself: Caring for someone with DPDR can be emotionally draining sometimes. Make sure to prioritize your own well-being as well.

Remember: you are not alone! There are resources available to support you on this journey.
